entire life. She was the “chubby kid” in grade school and
the “big girl” in high school. Four years after she graduated
from high school, she topped the scales at 400 pounds.
By the time she was 24, Williams had already developed
several life-threatening conditions, including sleep apnea,
hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and insulin-dependent
weight-induced diabetes.
She tried for years to lose the weight, exercising and
trying Atkins, Weight Watchers, and Overeaters Anonymous
to take off extra pounds, only to regain them later. She
then began investigating gastric bypass surgery.
“I chose to have gastric bypass because my father came
to me before he died and told me that he needed to know I
was going to live a happy and healthy life,” Williams says.

Williams was referred to Leslie Cagle, MD, FACS, at
PeaceHealth Medical Group Weight Loss Surgery. Her
insurance required that she participate in a medically
supervised program to prepare for the procedure. With the
help of the PeaceHealth Weight Loss Surgery team, she
quit smoking, began exercising, lost more than 45 pounds,
and was scheduled for her surgery in October 2010.
Now, nearly 2½ years after the procedure, Williams’ life
has changed radically. She has lost 260 pounds, resolved
her prior obesity-related health concerns, and reinvented

SHARING THE JOY
She also believes in giving back. That’s why she is using
her position as the 2012 Ms. Fabulous Honoree in the only
national pageant for bariatric surgery patients to sponsor
two contestants for the event.
